A Map of the World
From Nano Chatfield, Chairman, Board of Trustees

There's so much energy and creativity exploding in the air at the Children's Village! One volunteer, Jennie Schueler, an artist and painter, designed this map of the world which now hangs in our Recreation Hall/Community Center. Made from sailcloth (which will allow us to hose it down when it gets dirty) it stretches 48 feet by 20 feet. Jennie inspired all of the volunteers to help trace and cut each country in the world out of pieces of sailcloth, which were then glued and tacked on. Countless hours of work!

The same week that we hung the world map banner in the Rec Hall, our Athletics Director, Mike Kuttner and Peter Mmassy, our Deputy Director, designed and installed 2 indestructible basketball hoops made with oil drums, metal pipes and cement. Few of our kids and the kids from the village actually know how to play basketball. Everyone’s prized possessions are their cleats, which they rarely take off, even when they are not playing football (actually soccer). So we now have kids slipping and sliding in their cleats on the cement floor, playing basketball, and asking "Where’s Jamaica? Where’s New York? Where’s Kenya?" So we hope our kids will learn how large the world is while learning how to dribble!
