Tanzanian Children's Fund

Construction

In June 2008 we started the last phase of construction at the Rift Valley Children’s Village. We are building 2 more Children’s Houses and pathways and landscaping of the grounds. The Children’s Village is now comprised of 12 buildings: 3 houses for children, staff housing, volunteer housing, an office and infirmary, houses for the Director and Managing Director, storage facility, Library and Pre-School, and Recreational Hall-Community Center.

In remote villages like ours in Tanzania, construction is time-consuming because everything is dug and built by hand without any power tools or machinery. Construction crews hammer away at large boulders to provide for the foundation; cement is made by their feet; and concrete blocks made on site.

Since July 2007 when we began managing Gyetighi Primary School, we have started renovating classrooms and teachers’ housing. We’ve completed renovation on two teacher’s houses and two classrooms (Kindergarten and Standard 1). Since there are 12 classrooms and 9 teachers’ houses which are in need of repair, we will still be involved with construction for years to come!
